Training Pathway

The training pathway diagram below is correct for all higher medical training programmes, i.e. specialties that fall under the Royal College of Physicians. It outlines progression from medical school through to consultant appointment. It also shows the points where competitive entry (i.e. interview) is required and also exam requirements.

NB: there are exceptions to the diagram, as follows:

  • Core Training – The below diagram assumes that a candidate is completing a standard 24 month Core Medical Training programme before entering higher training.  Candidates may also apply following a 36 month Acute Care Common Stem (Acute Medicine) programme.  In this instance, applicants would need to complete the full 36 months before being eligible to apply for higher training.
  • Run-through training – Some programmes at CT1/ ST1 entry level are run-through, i.e. once appointed at CT1/ST1 level, a trainee will progress right through to CCT without the need to apply for higher training, assuming they continue to make satisfactory progress each year.  This is sometimes the case with academic (ACF) programmes and will be made clear in the advert for the programme.
